However, this isn't always the situation. Cars are becoming more high-tech and that includes keys. A local locksmith can replace a standard car key but if you're using a smart or remote key, you'll need find a professional with the right tools and expertise.

If the correct PIN is entered by the vehicle when the key was inserted, it will respond with an immobiliser code and the engine will begin. This is referred to as a "chip key" and is very secure.
It is easy to replace these keys in the event that you lose keys. You can obtain them from your local auto locksmith. The only issue is that from 1998 onwards, the Citroen vehicles were equipped with a distinct type of chip (known as a 'fiat' type 33) which is more difficult to replace in these instances. In these instances it is required to carry out a process known as 'eeprom-work' to obtain the most important data.

A dealer will also require you to show the V5 document and ID in person to place an order for the replacement key, which could take between two and five working days to arrive. Once you've received the replacement key it must be programed to your specific vehicle so that it can operate correctly - this can be quite costly of money when you purchase a car from a dealer.
