Treatments For ADD - Drugs and Counselling

Drugs and counseling are both effective treatments for ADD. Both are important to test to determine which is more efficient.

general-medical-council-logo.pngPeople suffering from classic ADD are inattentive, disorganized and often hyperactive. They have low blood flow in their prefrontal cortex, the basal Ganglia and the thalamus. They also have low dopamine levels. Dopamine levels are usually increased as part of treatment for adhd.

Stimulants

Stimulants stimulate the body's systems. They are available in the form of prescription drugs like amphetamines, methylphenidates, as well as diet aids such as Didrex, Bontril, and Fastin. They are also illegally abused and often mixed with other substances such as cocaine and methcathinone. They are available in the form of pills, liquids, syrups or patches.

They increase the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine that are present in the brain's synapses, improving concentration. They also reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity, and improve working memory. They are among the most commonly used medications prescribed to adults suffering from ADHD. They can cause adverse effects like a decrease in appetite, insomnia and an increase in heart rate or blood pressure. They may interfere with certain medications and medical conditions, so it's important to discuss any concerns with your doctor.

Medications can reduce ADHD symptoms in around 70% to 80% of those who are taking them. Not all people respond the same way to the medication and the effects may not last for long.

Some people aren't a fan of stimulants or aren't able to tolerate their adverse effects. In this situation doctors may prescribe nonstimulant drugs. These drugs aren't as effective as stimulants, but they can aid in improving attention, focus and control of impulses. Doctors sometimes prescribe these along with stimulants to increase their effectiveness.

Nonstimulant drugs take longer to work and don't perform as efficiently. They don't increase dopamine levels and have different effects on neurotransmitters. Examples include the atomoxetine (clonidine), guanfacine, and clonidine. Drowsiness is the most common side consequence. The drowsiness can be reduced by increasing the dosage or taking the medication prior to bedtime. The drowsiness should diminish within several weeks after starting treatment.

Antidepressants

The majority of antidepressants alter the chemical composition in the brain, referred to as neurotransmitters. The drugs are classified based on how they interact with neurotransmitters. Each group has slightly different medications. These include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), atypical antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Your doctor may prescribe a medication belonging to one of these groups to relieve depression or anxiety symptoms. These medications might not provide immediate relief, as it can take weeks before you experience the full benefits. You and your doctor will determine which medication is best for you. They can mix two antidepressants or add other medicines to improve the effects of your treatment. This is known as an augmentation. The most common augmentation drugs are aripiprazole, quetiapine and lithium.

Antidepressants can have different adverse effects. It's important to talk to your doctor about these side effects, as some may interfere with your daily activities. These adverse effects may be mild or severe, and they can be triggered by the type of antidepressant you're taking. Tell your doctor if you're taking any other medications, including herbal remedies and over-the-counter drugs like St. John's Wort.

SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants, and are known to have less adverse effects than other antidepressants. The SSRIs include fluoxetine (Prozac) as well as paraxetine (Paxil and Pexeva) and sertraline (Zoloft).

SNRIs boost levels of serotonin as well as norepinephrine levels in the brain. This is the reason SNRIs are thought to be more efficient than SSRIs. They also have longer half-lifes than SSRIs and are less likely to interact with other drugs. SNRIs include duloxetine (Cymbalta) and venlafaxine (Effexor).

Atypical antidepressants can be utilized to boost energy and help you feel more awake. They can be helpful for those suffering from anxiety or insomnia. Bupropion (Wellbutrin and Zyban) as well as mirtazapine are two of most common. These medications can cause insomnia or jitteriness, but can be helpful for people suffering from depression, Untreated Adhd Life Expectancy, and anxiety. They are also used for bulimia and for smoking cessation.

Cognitive therapy for behavioural problems

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for adhd and ptsd combined for mental health disorders. It is based upon the notion that feelings and thoughts are connected and can be altered. CBT is a measurable, short-term procedure that can teach you new ways to cope with stressors and bad habits. It can also be used to treat anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

CBT seeks to transform unhelpful thoughts and emotions into positive thoughts or behaviours. The method is the combination of two therapies which are cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy. It's a kind of psychotherapy that's usually short-term, and it can be performed in a group or an individual setting. You will be taught various methods by a therapist and then you'll apply them in daily life. Some of these techniques include: the ability to recognize negative automatic thoughts, practicing mindfulness meditation and keeping a thought journal.

A therapist will also help you identify the negative thoughts that lead to maladaptive behaviors and then teach you strategies for changing these beliefs. They'll also teach you problem-solving techniques to help you deal with challenges that arise in your everyday life. CBT therapists encourage you to set SMART goals in order to help you to keep track of your progress.

Although each type of cognitive behavior therapy has an approach that is slightly different but they all are focused on identifying the underlying thoughts that cause emotional distress and then changing them. Therapists employ different methods but they are all based on the principles operant and classical conditioning, which involves the association of stimuli with their effects. During the therapy the therapist will be rewarded for your accomplishments and punish you for not completing the tasks.

In the initial few sessions your therapist will help you identify the problem behaviors and replace them with healthier ones. You might be given homework to help you master the abilities. Depending on the nature of your condition you could require up to 6-20 one-onone sessions.

CBT is effective in treating a wide range of conditions including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic disorder (PTSD). It also works in treating adult ADHD, a condition that affects people as young seven.

Counselling

Counselling is a form of psychotherapy which uses regular, scheduled sessions with a therapy (counsellor) to discuss your problems. The sessions can last from 30 minutes to 50 minutes and can be conducted face-to-face in groups, or by phone. Counselling can be used to treat a range of mental health problems such as depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It can also be used to talk about relationship, friendship and family issues as well as work-related difficulties.

A counselor will listen attentively to your problems and offer an objective view. They can detect patterns of behavior and suggest ways to alter them. They can help you learn techniques and coping skills for managing anxiety, stress, or depression. They can assist you in adapting to major life changes like divorce or the loss of loved ones. They can help you learn to manage addictions and chronic illnesses.

Some counsellors charge fees for their services, while others are covered by Medicare rebates when you have mental health plans from your doctor.
