Types of Anxiety Disorder Medication

Medications are a great way to manage anxiety symptoms. Psychologists have extensive experience in the use of medication and are able to formulate appropriate prescriptions that will minimize side effects.

Treatment for anxiety disorders is usually three-pronged, including therapy, medication and exercise. SSRIs are the first option of medication to treat anxiety, can take up to several weeks to take effect.

SSRIs

SSRIs are the best drug for generalized anxiety disorder of choice for most anxiety disorders. The latest SSRIs have more favorable adverse effects than tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and monoamine oxide inhibitors (MAOIs). Several SSRIs are FDA-approved to treat generalized anxiety disorder, such as fluoxetine (aka Prozac), paroxetine (aka Paxil), sertraline (aka Zoloft), and citalopram (aka Celexa).

These medicines can boost serotonin in the brain, and can also increase norepinephrine, or BDNF. They can be used alone or in conjunction with psychotherapy. SSRIs can cause side effects, like nausea and digestive issues however, they tend to improve as the body becomes used to the medication.

The precise mechanism behind the action of SSRIs on anxiety isn't well understood. It is believed that SSRIs inhibit the reuptake serotonin by the post-synaptic neurons and increase the amount of serotonin in the synaptic gaps. This enhances the signaling across the synapses and reduces anxiety symptoms.

SSRIs can reduce anxiety and increase the frequency of panic attacks. They can also be used to treat depression and other mental disorders that are often associated with anxiety disorders. They can be used in conjunction with psychotherapy or other forms of cognitive behavior therapy, which could increase their effectiveness.

SSRIs aren't addictive unlike some other antidepressants. However, it is essential to follow your doctor's instructions exactly. If you stop taking your medication abruptly it could trigger "discontinuation syndrome" and a return of anxiety symptoms.

If SSRIs are not working for you, your doctor might suggest a different antidepressant class, such as nefazodone, or mirtazapine. These medications are also effective, but have a higher risk of side effects than the newer SSRIs.

SSRIs can interact with certain foods, like red meat, eggs, dairy, and some vegetables and fruits. It is advised to avoid these foods if you are taking these medications. Additionally, it is generally recommended to avoid drinking alcohol while taking SSRIs because this can increase the severity of some side effects.

Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines improve the calming effect of certain chemical substances within the nervous system and brain. They enhance the effects of the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acids (GABA), a substance that suppresses nerve activity. These drugs are effective in treating insomnia, anxiety disorders and other psychological disorders. They can be addictive and should be used only for short periods under medical supervision. Benzos can be dangerous when used in a recreational manner, or when mixed with alcohol or other substances.

Medications are often the first thing that people look for when they're suffering from an anxiety disorder however they're not the only option for treatment. Psychotherapy or talk therapy has also been proven to be an effective method to decrease anxiety disorder symptoms. There are a myriad of psychotherapies that can help however the most well-known and effective one is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This type of psychotherapy teaches you how to change your behavior and thoughts to make you less stressed as much.

Alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide, diazepam, clorazepate, lorazepam and quazepam are among the most commonly used benzodiazepines. Each of them has a distinct set of side effects, but they all have similar properties in pharmacology. For instance, clorazepate can be more effective for treating seizure disorders than other drugs, and lorazepam works better than quazepam.

Benzodiazepines are extremely effective, but they are not recommended for long-term use because they can cause tolerance and physical dependence. They can also cause withdrawal symptoms, such as a heart pounding shaking, sweating, and shaking if you abruptly stop taking the medication. The symptoms can be uncomfortable and last for a long time. However they can be slowed down when you reduce the medication slowly.

Benzodiazepines are highly addictive and should be used only for a short duration. In general, not more than four weeks. You must monitor your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing closely during this period to ensure that you do not have a severe reaction. Consult your physician when you're considering taking a benzoodiazepine.

Beta-blockers

Beta-blockers are a type of medication that can help to alleviate anxiety symptoms. These drugs prevent adrenaline from binding to beta receptors in your nervous system, which prevents the hormone from triggering physical responses like heart tremors and heart palpitations. These drugs are typically used to treat high blood pressure and other cardiovascular issues. However, they can be prescribed off-label for anxiety.

When you are anxious, your body produces a chemical known as adrenaline, which signals the body to prepare for fight or flight. Adrenaline binds with beta receptors in the brain and the heart and causes your heart rate to increase and may cause other physical reactions. Beta-blockers, which are an class of drugs that is used to treat hypertension and other heart ailments, work by blocking the adrenaline binding which reduces the heart rate and blood pressure.

In contrast to SSRIs and benzodiazepines, which require a long time to show a significant improvement in your symptoms, beta-blockers work quickly. They are a good choice for those who require immediate relief from the symptoms of anxiety. For instance, people who are required to deliver a public speech or fly in an airplane. In addition, they are ideal for those who suffer from anxiety as well as a chronic heart condition like congestive heart failure or atherosclerosis.

Although beta-blockers are effective in reducing the physical symptoms of anxiety, they fail to address the underlying cause of the disorder. This is why they are usually prescribed as part of an overall treatment plan that includes counseling and lifestyle modifications. However, they are a useful option for people who have tried other medications for anxiety but haven't found them to be effective or to cause uncontrollable side effects.

Propranolol, atenolol, and other beta-blockers are available. Your doctor will decide the best medicine for social anxiety disorder one for you depending on your medical history and your health. These medications can trigger side effects such as low blood pressure or fatigue. It is essential to discuss the options for treatment with your doctor.

MAOIs

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), developed in the 1950s as an antidepressant, work for certain anxiety and depression disorders. They aren't as frequently utilized as SSRIs or other antidepressants due the strict dietary restrictions needed and the risk of drug interactions. Some MAOIs are in tablet form and are taken orally, while others (such Emsam) are applied as a transdermal patch for skin.

MAOIs inhibit the action of MAO which increases the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine that is found in the brain. These neurotransmitters play a role in sleep, mood and appetite, as also in sexual function. MAOIs have an anti-anxiety effect. They are more likely than TCAs or SSRIs to cause adverse effects and come with warnings regarding suicide.

In addition to the MAOIs listed below your doctor may prescribe additional treatments or medications to help you manage your symptoms. Beta-blockers, such as propranolol, is often prescribed to reduce physical symptoms that are associated with anxiety. Your doctor might suggest relaxation techniques or other treatments at home to ease your symptoms.

Iproniazid was the first MAOI discovered in 1952 while conducting research on tuberculosis. It was quickly discovered that it could be a mood-enhancing drug and is considered the original antidepressant drug. Typically, MAOIs can only be used when other antidepressants do not work, since they can cause serious side effects that require immediate medical attention.

It could cause a risky reaction that results in high blood pressure when you take an MAOI when you eat foods that contain tyramine. Tyramine is present in a wide variety of red meats and cheeses as well as in fish, shellfish and some dietary supplement. This severe reaction can cause a throbbing head pain, nausea, vomiting and a fast heartbeat. MAOIs may also interact with other medications and trigger serious side effects, such as suicidal thoughts and behavior.

Your doctor will discuss your dietary needs with you before prescribing MAOIs. He or she will advise you to stay clear of eating foods that contain tyramine if you are taking the drug. The doctor may also give you a list of food that are safe to consume when taking MAOIs. This food guide can help you avoid MAOI-related side effects.human-givens-institute-logo.png
