How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It is a little tricky to test as there are different connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stay shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.
The signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. The good news is they are very affordable and readily available particularly if you're looking at a Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this component is also a good option.
5. Tachometer
A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of many problems in your car. It is a crucial part of your Audi's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car key replacement audi's crankshaft is turning.
