How a VC Can Affect Your Heart

PVCs are common and can be experienced by many people with no cause for concern. But if they occur frequently, PVCs can weaken your heart muscle and increase the risk of heart failure.

Glass-Replacement-150x150.jpgThe heart's rhythm is usually controlled by a group of nerve fibers situated in the upper right corner of your heart. This is known as the sinoatrial node, or SA. Electrical signals travel to lower heart chambers or ventricles.

Causes

PVCs occur when the electrical impulse that normally initiates your heartbeat at the Sinus Node (also known as the Sinoatrial or the SA node) does not. The impulse actually begins in the ventricles, which causes an untimed heartbeat. These extra beats are also known as ventricular tachycardia, and ventricular fibrillation. It may feel like the heart skipped a beat or feels like it is fluttering. They may occur infrequently without causing any symptoms, but they could also happen frequently enough to affect your quality of life. Your doctor may prescribe medication in the event that they are frequent or cause dizziness, weakness or fatigue.

In most people, PVCs are harmless and don't increase your risk of developing heart disease or other health problems. Over time, repeated PVCs can weaken the heart muscle. This is especially true if the PVCs result from a condition like dilated cardiomyopathy and arrhythmogenic right ventricle cardiomyopathy which could lead to heart failure.

The symptoms of PVCs include a feeling that your heart skips a beat or flutters, and you may feel exhausted. The fluttering could be more apparent when you exercise or have certain foods or drinks. PVCs are more prevalent in those suffering from chronic stress or anxiety. Some drugs, like digoxin, amiodarone or cocaine, can also increase their risk.

If you are experiencing occasional PVCs your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes and medications. If they're a frequent occurrence, you may need to avoid some drinks and foods, such as alcohol and caffeine. You can also reduce your stress and make sure you get enough sleep and exercise.

If you've got a lot of PVCs Your window & door doctor may suggest a medical procedure known as radiofrequency catheter ablation. This procedure eliminates the cells that are responsible for them. This is done by a specialist called an electrophysiologist. The treatment is typically effective in treating PVCs which reduce symptoms, but does not prevent them from recurring in the future. In some cases it can increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib) which is an illness that can cause stroke. This isn't common but it could be life-threatening.

Symptoms

Premature ventricular contractions or PVCs may cause your heart to skip or to flutter. These extra heartbeats are harmless, but you might need to see your doctor in the event of frequent heartbeats or if you are experiencing symptoms such as dizziness or fatigue.

Normally, electrical signals begin at the sinoatrial junction, located in the top right side of the heart, and move down to the lower chambers (or ventricles) that pump blood. The ventricles contract to force blood into the lungs. They return to the center to start the next cycle of pumping. However, a pvc Doctor begins in a different location and is located in the bundle of fibers, known as the Purkinje fibers, in the lower left part of the heart.

When PVCs occur and the heart is affected, it may appear to be skipping a beat or pounding. If you experience a few episodes and no other symptoms, your cardiologist probably won't treat you. If you have many PVCs the doctor may suggest that you undergo an electrocardiogram (ECG) to determine the heartbeat over the course of 24 hours. He or she might also recommend wearing a Holter monitor, which will record your heartbeat over time to determine how many PVCs you have.

People who have had a previous heart attack or suffer from cardiomyopathy -which affects how the heart pumps blood- should be aware of their PVCs and consult an expert in cardiology about lifestyle changes. These include abstaining from alcohol, caffeine and smoking, managing anxiety and stress, and getting enough sleep. A cardiologist can prescribe beta blockers to slow down the heartbeat.

Even if you don't experience any other signs however, you should have PVCs checked by an cardiologist if they occur often. These extra heartbeats can point to an issue with the structure of your heart or other health conditions and, over time if they occur often enough, they could weaken the heart muscle. But the majority of people suffering from PVCs don't have any issues. They simply want to know that the fluttering or skippy heartbeats aren't typical.

Diagnosis

PVCs may feel like fluttering or skipped heartbeats, especially when they are frequent or intense. People who experience them frequently might feel faint. They can also happen with exercise, though many athletes who experience them do not have any issues with their health or heart. PVCs can be detected in tests like an electrocardiogram (ECG) or Holter monitor. They use sticky patches with sensors on them to record electrical impulses from your heart. A cardiologist might also use an echocardiogram that uses ultrasound to study the heart and observe how it's working.

A doctor may be able to identify if someone has PVCs from a history and physical exam. Sometimes it is possible that they not be aware of PVCs until they examine patients for a different reason, like following an accident or a surgery. Ambulatory ECG monitoring systems also assist in detecting PVCs and other arrhythmias, and can be used when there is a concern of cardiac disease.

If your cardiologist determines your heart is structurally healthy, reassurance may be all you need. If your symptoms are causing discomfort or cause you to feel anxious, staying away from caffeine, alcohol and over-the-counter decongestants and reducing stress may help. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and drinking enough fluids can all help reduce the frequency of PVCs. If you are experiencing symptoms that are persistent or severe, talk to your doctor about medication that could be able to manage the symptoms.

Treatment

If PVCs aren't causing symptoms or are not frequent generally, they don't require treatment. If they occur frequently, your doctor might want to check for heart problems or suggest lifestyle adjustments. You may also undergo an intervention to get rid of them (called radiofrequency catheter ablation).

When you have PVCs, the electrical signal that triggers your heartbeat is generated from a place outside of the sinoatrial node (SA node) in the top right corner of your heart. It can feel like your heart skips beats or has extra beats. They're more common among people suffering from heart disease however, it's not clear the reason behind them. PVCs are more frequent as you age, and may occur more often during exercises.

A doctor should conduct an ECG and an echocardiogram on a patient who suffers from frequent and painful PVCs to identify structural heart conditions. They should also conduct an exercise stress test to see whether the additional beats are due to physical activity. A heart catheterization, cardiac MRI or nuclear perfusion studies can be conducted to determine other reasons for the extra beats.

Most people who suffer from PVCs don't experience any issues and can live an ordinary life. They may increase your risk for dangerous heart rhythm disorders, especially if they occur in certain patterns. In certain cases, it means that the heart muscle becomes weaker and is unable to pump blood through your body.

A regular, healthy diet and plenty of exercise can help reduce your chances of developing PVCs. Avoid foods that are high in fat and sodium and reduce your intake of caffeine and tobacco. Also, you should try to get enough sleep and reduce stress. Some medicines can also increase the risk of developing PVCs. If you take any of these medicines it is essential that you follow the advice of your doctor about eating healthy, exercising, and taking your medication.

In studies of patients suffering from high PVC burdens (more than 20% of the total heartbeats) the higher rate of arrhythmia-induced cardiac myopathy was found. Some patients may require a heart transplant.
