Patio Door Lock Repairs

Glass-Replacement-150x150.jpgOver time, patio doors experience wear and tear that could result in lock malfunctions. There are a few easy steps you can take to restore the security of your uPVC door.

These easy fixes can make your home safer, whether you realign the lock or clean the locking mechanism.

Clean the Lock

While patio doors are a great way to let in the outside and keep the elements out however, they can also pose a security risk if your lock isn't working as it should. Over time, wear, tear, cold and hot weather dirt and debris can cause your patio door lock to become difficult to operate. With a little attention, you can make sure that your patio door's lock always works properly.

It is important to first clean the patio door lock and all moving parts. This will help remove any dirt or coatings that could be preventing your lock from functioning correctly. Start by wiping down the moving parts of your patio door's lock with a damp, clean cloth. then employ a scouring pad or rough damp cloth to scrub any difficult-to-access parts of the door and frame that are coated with dirt. It is recommended to wipe the entire lock with dry cloths to eliminate any remaining dampness and let it to dry completely before applying it to the next time.

If your patio door uses pin-tumbler latches you can lubricate it by applying powdered Graphite to the key. You can also apply a Teflon oil like WD-40 Multi-Use Product. This kind of lubricant can be applied with ease and does not dissolve over time. If you are unable to find the right lubricant for your lock, you can apply a pencil that has a thicker tip. Insert the pencil in the lock, then shake it around to distribute the graphite.

Regular maintenance is also essential to keep the tracks of sliding patio doors free of dust, dirt and debris. These tracks can be especially vulnerable to snow and ice which can cause them become stuck or slack, making it harder for your patio doors to open and close.

Sliding patio door track rails and rollers can be cleaned by removing any dirty or damaged weather stripping and cleaning them before installing it. The rollers for patio doors can be cleaned and sprayed with an oil that is nonstick.

Lubricate the Moving Parts

uPVC French Doors, similar to sliding patio door repair patios, are operated with 3 to 4 or sometimes 5 point locking mechanisms. They include the lock cylinder and handle that is operated by a key. They require maintenance and the lubrication of moving parts. This can be done using an oil that is thin (never WD40) and is recommended to be done at least once per year.

If sagging hinges aren't the cause, the door may be misaligned and catching or striking the strike plate hole in the frame. The solution is to remove the strike plate and then use an abrasive chisel, which will enlarge the mortise that it rests in. This will allow the latch to fit properly into the hole, and prevent it from rubbing against the frame.

While the cylinder is out of the way, measure its width with the help of a book or piece wood that will fit in the adjustment screw gap above the lock. The outer dimension is measured from the outside of door to the center of cylinder. The inner dimension is measured from the center adjustment screw until the end cylinder.

Check the Lock's Width

If your patio door latch is hard to turn, even after oiling and cleaning, it's possible that it is not aligned with the strike plate. Check to see if the door is balanced and if the hinge screws are tight, but in many cases shifting the strike plate upwards or downwards can fix the issue.

Most of the time, the issue occurs when the lock's strike is too small for the latch to engage. In this case you'll have to increase the hole using a chisel or hammer and then test the latch to ensure that it contacts the strike plate without rubbing against or getting caught on the frame of the door jamb.

You should identify the type mortise lock you currently have before buying a replacement. You can do this by taking a look at the faceplate of the lock and determining whether it is round or square. Then, look at the screw holes on the existing lock and note the size of each. This information will help you find an alternative lock that is the same width and is a perfect fit for the hole that you already have.

You'll need to identify the mortise lock and examine it for any bends, scratches or other damage that needs to be repaired. A bent or damaged latch is more prone to break than one that's not frequently used, so be sure to replace the lock with a new, secure version if you find any signs of wear or damage.

After you've determined the type of lock replacement you require, it's now time to start the actual repair. Remove the old handle and spindle from the patio door, and then put in the new one. Start by putting in the handle inside by aligning it with the spindle and then securing it in place with the two screws or bolts which hold it. Once the handle's interior is installed, you can install the handle on the outside and screw it into place, too. After you've completed the steps, you can test the new handles to ensure they can be opened and closed easily and that the latch catches correctly with the strike plate.

Check the Strike of the Door.

The strike plate and the door latch are two parts that work together in order to lock the door. If these are misaligned and the latch doesn't latch the door shut correctly. This is typically simple to fix.

First, check the holes in the strike plate's receiving to ensure they are clear of obstructions like dirt or plastic plugs. Loosen the keeper screws holding the strike plate in position. This will allow it to move horizontally, but not separate it from the frame. Then, you can adjust the strike plate so that its receiving holes align with the latch hooks on the door latch. After the strike plate has been adjusted, tighten the screws and then test the door to determine whether it locks smoothly after the new adjustment.

Door strike plates can be a bit difficult to access for homeowners who have sliding patio doors, but they're essential for locking and unlocking your door. The metal plates are typically located at the top and bottom of the door jamb, where they support the door's latch. Then, the door latch is able to slide into the strike plate, creating an airtight seal when closed. If the strike plate is damaged, rusted, or is not properly installed the latch may not properly lock the door.

A misalignment between the latch and strike plate is one common cause for the patio lock to not close or remain in place. The most effective way to test for this is to perform the "lipstick test." Rub some lipstick on the outside of the deadbolt and attach masking tape over it. When you close the door, the lipstick will leave a mark on the tape that will show you exactly where the latch contacts the strike plate. If the mark is too low or high it is possible to adjust the strike plate.

The sliding patio door locks protect your home from burglars, and if they're not functioning properly, you need to solve the issue fast. By following these easy steps, you can repair your patio door's lock and restore its functionality in a matter of minutes.
